(For an explanation, see the introduction on part 1 of this series.)
The intervening period between the end of the Tribune's lifespan and the launch of the U.S.S. Exodus, as well as the initial weeks following the Exodus launch, were an eventful and transitional period in the life of Tigs Syren. During this time Tigs married his best friend, Josephine Skara, received a promotion to lieutenant commander, earned a commendation for his investigative work uncovering the Nova project conspiracy, and accepted the chief engineer position aboard the Defiant-class Exodus.
The Exodus was primarily a ship of battle, serving admirably in conflicts with the Borg and Maquis, and later, thriving during the Dominion War. Improvements to the Exodus over previous designs included a functional biology department, cutting-edge holographic technology, and a small contingent of fightercraft.
Captain Kiva Niedz' command of the Exodus proved to be short-lived, as she disappeared from the ship a few short months after its launch and was declared missing, the victim of an apparent abduction by Q. Her replacement for most of the first year was Captain Gawyn Trakand.
Tigs' personal life adapted to his surroundings as his family began to grow. After their wedding, Tigs and Skara adopted a kitten, Kerowyn, their first family member aboard ship, though more were to come. A mission to a Maquis prison led to the rescue of Tigs' foster sister, Kim Varol, who had been presumed killed. Kim was pregnant at the time of her rescue, and she soon gave birth to a daughter, Andrea Sorel, Tigs' half-Bajoran, half-Cardassian niece. Sadly, Kim was later killed in a Borg attack, but Tigs and Skara chose to adopt Andrea and raise her as their own.
As the Exodus' first year drew to a close, there would be yet another change in command. After Captain Trakand's sudden resignation, Tigs experienced a short stint as acting captain of the Exodus, and lobbied hard to replace Trakand as the starship's next commanding officer. In the end, however, permanent command of the Exodus would be given to Captain Nico Juber, formerly the chief medical officer of both the Tribune and Exodus, and Tigs and Skara's closest friend.
